Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to develop an algorithm for approximate solutions of nonlinear hyperbolic partial differential equations.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, an algorithm based on the Haar wavelets operational matrix for computational modelling of nonlinear hyperbolic type wave equations has been developed. These types of equations describe a variety of physical models in nonlinear optics, relativistic quantum mechanics, solitons and condensed matter physics, interaction of solitons in collision-less plasma and solid-state physics, etc. The algorithm reduces the equations into a system of algebraic equations and then the system is solved by the Gauss-elimination procedure. Some well-known hyperbolic-type wave problems are considered as numerical problems to check the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed algorithm. The numerical results are shown in figures and Linf, RMS and L2 error forms.

Findings

The developed algorithm is used to find the computational modelling of nonlinear hyperbolic-type wave equations. The algorithm is well suited for some well-known wave equations.

Originality/value

This paper extends the idea of one dimensional Haar wavelets algorithms (Jiwari, 2015, 2012; Pandit et al., 2015; Kumar and Pandit, 2014, 2015) for two-dimensional hyperbolic problems and the idea of this algorithm is quite different from the idea for elliptic problems (Lepik, 2011; Shi et al., 2012). Second, the algorithm and error analysis are new for two-dimensional hyperbolic-type problems.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to develop and apply a high-order numerical method based on finite volume approximation for quadratic integrate-and-fire (QIF) neuron model with the help of population density approach.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors apply the population density approach for the QIF neuron model to derive the governing equation. The resulting mathematical model cannot be solved with existing analytical or numerical techniques owing to the presence of delay and advance. The numerical scheme is based along the lines of approximation: spatial discretization is performed by weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO) finite volume approximation (FVM) and temporal discretization are performed by strong stability-preserving explicit Runge–Kutta (SSPERK) method. Compared with existing schemes of orders 2 and 3 from the literature, the proposed scheme is found to be more efficient and it produces accurate solutions with few grid cells. In addition to this, discontinuity is added in the application of the model equation to illustrate the high performance of the proposed scheme.

Findings

The developed scheme works nicely for the simulation of the resulting model equation. The authors discussed the role of inhibitory and excitatory parts in variation of neuronal firing. The validation of the designed scheme is measured by its comparison with existing schemes in the literature. The efficiency of the designed scheme is demonstrated via numerical simulations.

Practical implications

It is expected that the present study will be a useful tool to tackle the complex neuron model and related studies.

Originality/value

The novel aspect of this paper is the application of the numerical methods to study the modified version of leaky integrate-and-fire neuron based on a QIF neuron. The model of the current study is inspired from the base model given in Stein (1965) and modified version in Kadalbajoo and Sharma (2005) and Wang and Zhang (2014). The applicability was confirmed by taking some numerical examples.

Abstract

Along with accounting scandals in the past, academics, researchers, and legislators have focused on fraud. The purpose of this study is to examine postgraduate and doctoral studies, articles, and books about forensic accounting and fraud audit published between the years 2008 and 2018 in Turkey. For this purpose, a total of 96 studies have been examined and 35 of these are master’s theses, 10 of them are PhD theses, 45 of them are articles, and six of them are books. These studies were presented in tables as classified. The studies examined in our research are summarized as year they were published, the author, and the scope of the topic and in terms of results. The conclusions of this study can be summarized as follows: (a) the majority of thesis published about forensic accounting and fraud audit are in 2011 and following years. In addition, most of the theses are focused on forensic accounting review rather than fraud audit. (b) Results in the articles reviewed are in the same direction with theses. (c) There are very few books about fraud audit and forensic accounting. One of them is related to fraud audit, while the rest of them are related to forensic accounting and forensic accounting profession. We suggest extending the scope of the study and making to other countries.

Abstract

Purpose

Classical assumptions of agency theory (AT) fall short of providing satisfactory answers to modern management and organizational knowledge (MOK) problems, and there is a need for extending the scope of the field. This article aims to compare modern AT assumptions with the agency perspective of Islamic historical political treatises (namely, siyasetnamas) and point out how AT can be furthered.

Design/methodology/approach

This article applies content analysis method to find out agency perspectives in Islamic political treatises and then compare them with those of the basic AT assumptions to find out similarities and differences between them in explaining agency problems.

Findings

The agency perspective in siyasetnamas are based on the following assumptions which could contribute to the development of AT with their emphasis on (1) responsibilities beyond contracts, (2) entrustment rather than ownership, (3) shared societal responsibility rather than conflicting individual interests, (4) importance of self-control for both principals and agents and (5) trust discourse which emphasizes inner virtues rather than control discourse.

Originality/value

Agency perspectives cannot be considered independent of cultural imprints. By introducing siyasetnamas' agency perspective, this article makes an effort to suggest implications for how to further modern MOK based overwhelmingly on individualistic cultural assumptions to rediscuss agency problems from the viewpoint of specifically the emerging markets in which collectivist culture plays an important role in social and economic life. In this respect, siyasetnamas' agency perspective based on the notion of entrustment seems, arguably, to be a better fit to the contextual realities and managerial practices of emerging markets.
